Burning the Midnight Oil

Thirty paintings. Thirty days.

California Impressions # 13

AKA, the one that nearly didn’t happen. Because sometimes life gets in the way. Today was a day of errands and taxi driving. Building display panels. By the time I had some time I was more inclined to kick back with Mr. Spouse and watch Law & Order reruns from the last century.

And then I couldn’t sleep. Go figure. A painting kept playing in my head, a great big abstract water thing complete with a voice that said you will not remember this in the morning.

So I got out of bed and headed to my studio behind the house.

I already knew which canvas to use, this big old 3 x 4 foot puppy sporting some birds in a tree that I painted a few years ago, something back when I was painting all sorts of things looking for my voice and this was definitely not it.

But it made a great underlayer for tonight’s adventure.

Is it done? Probably not. Definitely not. I’ll need to look at it by the light of day, after some sleep. But for now it makes me happy on so many levels…mostly because it’s not those damn birds. But there was also a spontaneity that came from the late hour, from the adventure of getting out of bed and painting. And from painting in total silence–I never paint without music or some talky stuff.

There was something almost primal about the experience.

And now I’m going to bed.

Until tomorrow…or later today–

Thirty Paintings. Thirty Days.

California Impressions # 11.

I guess this week’s theme is water. One of these days there WILL be a boat.

But not today.

The weekend is coming up, I should have more time to paint. Can’t wait to go BIG again!

Till tomorrow–

The last couple of days I’ve been using oils. Been getting down and dirty and making a mess in the studio. I take them as far as I can in one sitting and then I have to stop. And wait. Days, maybe a week or so until the surface is dry enough to play on again. So this one, as well as #7, could quite possibly evolve and reappear later on in the series.

We shall see.

Tomorrow may be a surprise. I’ve been having visions of rowboats dancing in my head. Canoes.

We shall see. . .

This puppy is 40 x 40 inches. Not quite finished, I had to stop early and go to a wedding. Great time– love, friends, food . . . really, sometimes it’s good to get out of the studio.

But I’ll be back in it tomorrow, finishing this one and catching up with # 8.

Thirty Thirty # 4

California Impressions # 4

Sister Marjorie Ellen, an artist herself, had only one thing to say about yesterday’s painting: MORE YELLOW!

Since I always listen to my big sister (snark) but mostly because today’s painting was created after a full day of teaching and throwing something together with more yellow sounded heckuva lot better than anything my tired brain could conjure up, I decided to heed her advice.

And I’m glad I did.

For those of you who’ve just stumbled upon this series of posts, I’m taking part in Leslie Saeta’s Thirty/Thirty Challenge. Every day for thirty days I’ll be painting something and sharing it here. I decided I want to use this exercise as a way to find my voice with abstract landscapes. This week–maybe this month, I dunno–I’m painting variations of the same image, the one I created for day 1.

You can check it out here, along with the two paintings that followed before this one. Holy crappolony, what a difference a day (or three) makes!!!

As you can see, each day’s painting is looser than the day before. Intentionally so. My goal is to push this particular image until I can’t abstract it any more, until it tells me I’m done. Then I’ll move on to something else.

Would love to hear your thoughts on this. Let me know what you think in the comments below. And if you have any suggestions, throw ’em in. Who knows—I may say that’s just what I need.

Until tomorrow–
