Arty Life Weekend

Arty Life Weekend

Oh. My. So many adventures in Arty Life land the last couple of days. Brace yourself because this post is going to be skipping from one thing to the next, each topic guaranteed to make you more dizzy than the next.

First…and only because it happened minutes ago and I’m still as jumpy as a tweaker from the adrenalin rush…my brush with wildlife. There was a bear rat in the hay shed. Big sucker. But I was BRAVE. Oh, indeed I was, even with flip flops on my feet. No girly screaming like I did with the mouse. No. This time I was brave enough to stomp and shout with a very big voice like a very scary person. And bang a couple metal trash lids together like a one woman marching band. And Mr. Rat was so impressed he fell off one shelf and jumped down from another. The last I saw was his bare naked tail as it disappeared behind the hay.

Begone with you Templeton!

Now that I’ve impressed you with my wildlife management skills…you ARE impressed, aren’t you…now we can move on to Precious Man Dog (AKA Bean, AKA Benny) If you read Friday’s post, you’ll recall PMD was sorely in need of a haircut. Being a poodle mix the hair just grows. And grows. I let it grow over the winter to keep him warm. Dreadlocks happen and matts and clumps of thick, dense felt take over. Then in the spring I take to him with scissors and we start the cycle all over again.

So this was PMD last week.

This is him today, half the size he used to be. But so darn cute I can’t stand it.

Sophie is in the middle of her spring trim. I have to wait until she’s dead asleep before I can get certain spots. Like her chest. Right now she’s sporting a whole lot of chest hair. Throw a couple gold chains around her neck and she’d be a ringer for Burt Reynolds.

Okay, now it’s time to move on from critters, both wild and domestic, and get to art. Got a couple works in progress to show.

This is acrylic, 2’x2′. Don’t have a clue where it’s going but will know when it gets there. Layers and scribbles. Layers and scribbles.

This one is also acrylic, 36″x48″. Still very much a work in progress. Oh crap…as I’m writing this I’m wondering if I put the lid back on the jar of Titan Buff…well, let’s hope I did because it’s dark and I’m not heading back down to Studio Grande.

Speaking of Studio Grande, Mr. Spouse got some sheet rock up in the new! improved! Studio-Grande-to-be.

He was hoping to have it all rocked this weekend but it was slow going. Hard work indeed. But this is how Mr. Spouse relaxes from his desk job, he builds stuff. And I’m not complaining. By the way, this photo was taken after 6PM. Still good natural light, at least at this time of year. Even more when the tarps come off the skylights.

A gentle reminder that Wednesday is Random Acts of Art. I hope some of you will join me in sharing where you hide your treasures. You can send me photos before Tuesday (like, today) and I’ll post them on the blog. Or you can post the link to your own blog anytime between Wednesday and Saturday.

I’m posting art every day on my FaceBook page. Pop on over and check it out. And while you’re there, do me a GREAT BIG HUMONGOUS favor and click the ‘like’ button (for the page) if you haven’t done so already. And if you’ve already liked my page, pat yourself on the back because you are my BFF and I love you…truly love you… almost as much as I love chocolate!

In da Groove

Helloooooooo, my sweetums! Been a long time. Took the weekend off from posting. Oh man, what a vacation that was. Channeled my creativity into painting. Yes indeed. Got some ART to show you.

But first…the weather report.

Remember all that rain I bitched about rejoiced over last week? Sumthin’ like 12 inches by the Friday evening news. That’s a whole lot ‘o wet. Indeed.

But Saturday we woke up to SUN! Blue skies. Big yellow orb. Heaven. Pure heaven. For a couple of hours.

Steam trees

Walked outside and it was like an enchanted forest around here. All that water going back up to the sky.

SUnday snow

But it came down again. Only colder. Next morning we woke up to a different kind of enchantment. The kind that makes the dogs crazy happy.

But that’s enough about weather. Happens one way or another, every day. So let’s move on to ART!  YAY!!! Let’s hear it for studio time. YAY!

Sunday WIP

I can’t hear you. Let’s do it again. LOUDER!

YAY!

Much better. Okay, so here are some works-in-progress. All acrylics. 12×24, (2) 24×24, 40×40. The closest one to being finished is the one with the woman.

In Her Dreams

'In Her Dreams' by Susan Lobb Porter. Acrylic on canvas, 24x24

Pretty close to being done. Might be, in fact. But until it walks out the door to a new home I always reserve the right to make changes. Just because I can.

Oh, how I enjoyed being in the studio. Enjoyed being productive. Did some thinking while I was painting and realized I need to do more of that. But since there’s only so many hours in the day something’s got to give. So I decided to cut back on the blog schedule. Instead of posting EVERY DAY (Is that nuts or what???) I’m cutting back to three days a week. At least for the time being. To make things easy to remember, I’m thinking Monday, Wednesday, Friday.

So I’ll see you Wednesday. Remember, that’s Random Acts of Art day. If you’ve got a link to share, there’ll be a link up on my blog. You can also send your photos to me and I’ll post them here. If you’re sending photos, be sure I get them by Tuesday afternoon, Pacific time (California). Can’t wait to see what you have to share!

Until then, my sweetums…xo

There WILL Be Pictures

Well my sweetums, if you read yesterday’s poor excuse of a post you will recall I PROMISED you pictures today.

And you shall have them!

First are the eagerly awaited evidence of studio construction.

back wall

This is the back wall, the one opposite the door. The only plywood still to go up is the triangle above the windows. Is that the eves? Well, it was too high because it’s on a hill and Mr. Spouse decided next week will do.

front entry

And this is the front. With Bean sniffing around. Probably tinkled on something because he’s a dog and this is quasi-outdoor territory.

studio south wall

The wall of windows to the south. They will never be this clean again. Oh, that’s right, they’re not up yet. Ohhh…look at those boxes of skylights!

Okay, so now I’ll show you some paintings. Almost done. Not quite ready but close enough for show and tell.

Family Tree

I’m calling this one Family Tree. There will be more detail. More gold accents. It’s acrylic on canvas.

River Rocks

This one I’m calling River Rocks. Acrylic on canvas. Needs more layers. Stones need more work. Everything does. But I like to show works-in-progress because I think it’s cool to see where it’s been and what it becomes.

Reminder: If you are participating in Random Acts of Art Wednesday (RAAW) and don’t have a blog to link to, send me your photos TODAY and I’ll post them along with mine. If there are too many for the post I’ll make a gallery. There will be a place for links tomorrow. I hope to see LOTS of links and photos!

Studio Interruptus

Got a late start in Studio Grande today. Things to do, none of which (in hindsight) were really necessary.

I believe it’s called procrastination.

I understand why. Been rolling with the oils lately, like second nature. But today it was wax. That was the plan and I was sticking with it. And I did. I started small, a couple of 6″X6″ and one 12″X12″.

But I didn’t follow the plan exactly. In fact, except for the wax part, I didn’t follow it at all.

blank board

Instead of using the oils as a base, I began with a blank board. Blank except for some smudges. But smudges were OK because my new found plan was graphite drawing. Except there wasn’t a pencil to be found…in an art studio. Go figure.

Well I probably could’ve found one if I actually looked. But the charcoal was RIGHT THERE. On the counter. It was a sign, I’m telling you, a sign.

I started out with a couple coats of clear wax medium. Then I took some soft charcoal and scribbled a goodly mess. Then a quick fuse. Then I scraped some lines, bringing out the white, covered the whole thing with a couple more coats of medium and did it all again. And again and again and again. A couple layers up I began adding color via pastels and grownup artist crayons. Eventually it developed into a landscape although that was not the plan when first begun. Remember–no plan.

encaustic landscape

Looks much better up close and personal. Much. You’ll have to trust me on this. This one is close to finished but not quite there.

I got a couple more little ones going but no photos. Maybe tomorrow. Then I started on a 12X12.

base oil painting

This is the base oil painting. Started with a couple layers of clear wax medium. Then I incised some scribbles, brought them out with a glaze of burnt umber oil paint. Added some pastel. Made a total mess. Fused it. Covered the whole she-bang with a couple more coats of medium. I was really getting into it but oh man, it was getting late. So I decided to stop.

the dead zone

Here. In the dead zone. Artists know what this is. For my non-artist peeps, the dead zone is similar to when your kids are adolescents and you begin to think there’s no hope. You stick with them and eventually they turn out just fine. For dog people–just remember what it’s like when the puppy is five months old.

I think that explains it rather well.

Tomorrow I’ll show the finished piece. I’m looking forward to getting back to it.
