30 Paintings 30 Days, Day 10
Sometimes I’ll spend hours writing a blog post. I’ll work over that sucker till I’m sweating cyber blood, pulling cyber teeth, mixing metaphors and cliches like there’s no tomorrow.
I do it in the name of literary perfection. And whenever I write something like that, it sucks.
Happens with art too, like that painting over there (arrow pointing RIGHT and UP)
But then at the last minute, before I hit the publish button, I’ll open a new draft and write what I meant to say with a whole ‘nother voice. With MY voice. The words are fresh and come easy-peasy with no inner critic tripping up da muse.

Hey Judy, the first was using a different app. It was a struggle so it feels stiff to me, overworked. The kicker was when I imported it into Photoshop and saw that the file was too small for decent prints.
The second one is back to Procreate. It’s a lot looser and just flowed. That’s why I like it better.

The first one (though lovely!) has a staged quality to it, a stiffness that even manifests itself in the (too large) space between the girl and the vase.
The second one has great spontaneity! I am drawn to it intuitively, and I couldn’t love that hair any more if I tried! It feels much more real and authentic than the first, like you really captured the scene as it was meant to be captured. Woohoo for loose and free!
(I find the same thing with writing and drawing, both, by the way. Sometimes I spend 15 minutes crafting an opening paragraph, which I then ditch because it’s terrible. And there go 15 minutes I can’t get back! D’oh!)

You nailed the comparison, Ann. That’s exactly what I mean. And those 15 minutes you can’t get back–consider them the layers that make the final piece sing.

It is great to see someone else posting digital art. I have been playing with brushes and paper 53 on and off and I am so impressed with what you are creating with procreate. Bravo!
I just checked out your blog, Carroll. So excited to see another digital painter. I think this challenge is a great way to focus on learning a new way of doing things, don’t you? 🙂

Well Sue, I think of it as a first draft or even better, piano scales. And after we’ve warmed up the true creative magic happens.
